In conjunction with Professors Anthony and Karli Glass, Economic Insight has today published a Working Paper, setting out statistical approaches to provide a more robust measure of COVID deaths in England and Wales. The paper finds that the standard ‘excess deaths’ measure is over-stated, likely containing significant non-COVID deaths. The paper further finds that lockdown has increased deaths in net terms, likely because of its unintended consequences. The paper can be downloaded from the publications section of our website (and is also available online at the University of Sheffield; Loughborough University and at SSRN).
