How to robustly measure COVID-19 deaths? A non-technical summary

Two members of our team, Alasdair Crookes and Sam Williams, and two of our Associates, Professors Karli and Anthony Glass, have developed an econometric approach to measure the number of COVID deaths. Alasdair has written a short non-technical summary of this paper.

In the paper, they suggest that the standard measure (excess deaths) overestimates COVID mortalities by 50-60% and that the difference between their count and the excess deaths is largely explained by lockdown policy, i.e. in net terms the lockdown increased the number of deaths.
